Dwindling gas taxes ratchet up urgency to find alternatives

After years of warnings, this primary source of state transportation revenue is evaporating.

California lawmakers recently got a jolt when legislative analysts projected the state will lose nearly $6 billion in fuel tax revenues over the next decade as the state transitions to zero-emission vehicles.

Maryland faces a projected $3.3 billion transportation shortfall in the coming six years, due in part to declining gas taxes.
