E-scooter proliferation prompts push for safety legislation

The increase in personal electric vehicles has led to tragic accidents.

State lawmakers are cracking down on the electric scooters and bikes that increasingly crowd urban areas across the country in an attempt to make streets and sidewalks safer.

Three New Jersey lawmakers proposed legislation last month to require safety training for e-bike users, after the death of a 14-year-old boy. Pennsylvania Sen. Timothy Kearney (D) is sponsoring “Abby’s law” — named for a 12-year-old who died in June — which would bar youth under 16 from operating e-scooters and require older teenagers to wear helmets.
