Energy groups explore ways to counter Calif. gas car phase-out

Several national and state-based organizations aim to put a check on the Golden State.

Energy interest groups are exploring ways to translate momentum from Republican victories at the ballot box into action that could stymie California’s ability to squeeze gasoline-powered vehicles out of the market.

California, the nation’s biggest car market, has outsized influence over the car industry thanks to an exemption under the Clean Air Act that it uses to set stricter emissions policies than those issued by the federal government. Carmakers typically follow the California standards to simplify their manufacturing.
