American states carried out 45 executions this year, the largest number of capital punishment in a single year in a decade and a half, with three more scheduled before the end of the year.
Florida on Tuesday executed Mark Geralds, convicted of the murder of a young mother in Panama City Beach in 1989. Geralds was the 18th person put to death in a Florida prison this year, the highest total for any single state since Texas executed 24 prisoners in 2009.
