Governors take lead on social media regulation

They’re pushing for legislative action and ensuring kids’ digital health remains a prominent issue.

Governors are boosting the multi-year push in states to regulate social media platforms to protect kids, making the issue an executive branch priority.

In recent weeks, the Democratic governors of Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York have declared social media safety a top issue for 2026. And at least eight governors so far have mentioned youth online safety or social media’s impacts on teenagers in their State of the State and inaugural addresses.
