Iowa is set to become the latest Republican-led state to severely restrict abortion rights, with lawmakers passing a so-called heartbeat bill after a marathon one-day special session that lasted well into the night Tuesday and brought advocates from both sides of the issue to the state Capitol.
The bill, which will go into effect Friday when Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) signs it, bans the procedure in almost all cases after a fetal heartbeat is detected, around 6 weeks after conception and before most women know they are pregnant.
