La. lawmakers approve bill targeting out-of-state abortion medication providers

Republicans said it closes a loophole in the state’s strict ban.

Louisiana lawmakers gave final approval Tuesday to a bill that would allow women to sue anyone who helps them obtain abortion-inducing medication, adding to the state’s efforts to stop out-of-state doctors from aiding abortions there. 

Republican lawmakers and anti-abortion groups said the bill would close a major loophole in the state’s abortion ban, as out-of-state providers have continued to prescribe via telehealth a two-drug combination — mifepristone and misoprostol — that accounts for the majority of abortions performed in the United States.
