Landmark N.C. Medicaid program faces uncertain future

A nationally recognized program that uses Medicaid money to pay for things like food, housing and transportation faces an uncertain future in North Carolina. 

Lawmakers and advocates there are working to restore tens of millions of dollars in funding that was cut in the state budget from Healthy Opportunities Pilots. The first-in-the-nation program inspired states across the political spectrum to experiment with the potential to save Medicaid money and improve beneficiaries’ overall health by allowing them to use the funds for non-medical interventions.
