Lawmakers, Big Tech battle over youth online safety

There are bills in more than half of states aimed at regulating how online services interact with minors.

It’s been a cycle in recent years: states enact laws to keep kids safe online and the tech industry challenges them in court. And it’s showing no sign of abating, as lawmakers refuse to relent in their attempts to secure effective regulations and companies push back with the First Amendment.

This year, lawmakers in more than half of states are pursuing legislation aimed at regulating how online services, including social media platforms, interact with minors.
