Lawmakers crack down on recreational nitrous oxide sales as deaths rise

Legislation in states across the country has attracted broad, bipartisan support and limited opposition.

States are increasingly snuffing out sales of nitrous oxide, as vape shops and social media trends fuel a sharp rise in its recreational use. 

Cartridges, commonly known as “whippits” or laughing gas, have been sold for decades as whipped cream chargers, mild sedatives or engine boosters in high-performance vehicles.
