Lawmakers push to expand producers’ environmental responsibility

At least 143 bills have been introduced so far this year to help manage end-of-life processes for products.

Producers and manufacturers would play a larger role in helping reduce landfill waste and increase recycling under legislation lawmakers are considering in at least a dozen states.

There have been 143 bills concerning so-called extended producer responsibility, or EPR, introduced so far this year, according to tracking by the Product Stewardship Institute, which works with states to enact EPR measures.
