Lawmakers race to bolster restaurant industry

Restaurants turn attention to credit card swipe fees and reservation piracy

Lawmakers across the country considered legislation this year to boost a restaurant industry still transitioning to its post-pandemic normal.

At least three California Assembly bills set for hearings in the Senate Appropriations Committee would streamline regulatory requirements for existing and new restaurants. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster (R) signed a bill in May that seeks to lower restaurants’ insurance costs related to liquor liability. The Texas Restaurant Association in June touted the passage of 18 of its “priority bills,” including one focused on affordable housing that could benefit employees.
