Lawmakers seek to decrease food waste in landfills

At least 60 bills have been introduced over the last two years across 19 states.

States are exploring legislation to require composting and other ways to reduce food waste, an effort to save money, reduce methane emissions and help battle hunger.

Washington State enacted a bill last month, while legislation was also introduced in California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, New York and Rhode Island. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) vetoed a food waste bill in March.
