Lawmakers in at least five states that restrict abortion rights have rushed to file bills in the last two weeks that would protect in vitro fertilization and other fertility treatments, a response to the legal uncertainty surrounding an Alabama court ruling that embryos are people.
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) signed a fast-tracked bill Wednesday that allowed fertility clinics in the state to resume operations. But none of the bills in other states — including Georgia, Missouri, Kentucky and South Carolina — have so far seen any activity, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a nonprofit research and policy organization that supports abortion rights.
