Life lessons forged Va. House speaker’s ‘tenacity’

Don Scott wouldn’t let time in prison be the end to his story.

Looking back on his unlikely journey to become the first Black speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates, Don Scott (D) cites a self-belief spurred by adversity as the underlying theme through it all.

“I’ve had some very difficult experiences, some very hard life lessons that I learned,” Scott said in an interview. “But those life lessons forged the type of tenacity and … the ability to suffer a little bit to get to the goal that you need.”
