Maryland governor signs dynamic pricing ban

More than 90 bills regulating the practice have been introduced in at least a dozen other states.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore signed first-in-the-nation legislation Tuesday that will ban food retailers from using a customer’s personal data to set prices for goods and services.

The measure, which takes effect in October, will ban food retailers and third-party delivery providers from engaging in dynamic pricing, which is when a store changes prices on the basis of what its algorithmic technology knows about an individual shopper or customer. It also bars those entities from using data about protected classes to set prices.
