Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey (D) on Tuesday declared a state of emergency over the rapidly increasing number of migrant families arriving in the commonwealth, adding new pressure on the federal government to authorize work permits to help alleviate strains on states.
More than 20,000 migrants are in state shelters, Healey’s office said in a news release. The shelter system is expanding at what Healey called an unsustainable manner.
