Mich. targets pharmacy benefit managers to address drug prices

It’s the latest move aimed at the industry as lawmakers seek to rein in costs.

Michigan continued its overhaul of pharmacy benefit manager regulations this week, with a bill signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) that zeros in on contracts with companies that manage the state’s Medicaid plans.

The measure prohibits the state Department of Health and Human Services from entering into a contract with a Medicaid managed care organization that relies on a pharmacy benefit manager unless requirements meant to protect independent pharmacies are met.
