N.C. lawmakers pass $644M storm relief package

It’s designed to also help capture $2.9 billion in federal funds.

North Carolina lawmakers unveiled legislation Thursday to provide $604 million to help the state recover from Hurricane Helene, which struck the western part of the state last month and has so far taken 230 lives, including 96 in North Carolina.

The bill, which is being taken up by the legislature Thursday, includes $139 million for the Department of Environmental Quality to provide emergency bridge loans to local government units in counties with a federal disaster declaration for water and wastewater infrastructure repairs.
