N.Y. lawmakers pass bill to regulate powerful AI systems with safety rules

It aims to prevent models of the future from unleashing ‘critical harm.’

The largest, most powerful artificial intelligence systems would be subject to special safety rules under legislation New York lawmakers passed Thursday.

If signed into law, New York would become the first state to regulate so-called frontier AI models.
