State lawmakers should coalesce around a common definition and understanding of artificial intelligence and begin to weigh the role of state government in regulating the fast-emerging technology, according to recommendations contained in a new report on AI from the National Conference of State Legislatures.

The report, titled “Approaches to Regulating Artificial Intelligence: A Primer,” warns that “we are in a time of urgency” as AI proliferates and advises that while the technology offers potential upsides, it also brings with it risk.
