Nearly half of governors proposed spending cuts

States are navigating tighter budgets than when state coffers swelled early this decade.

Governors in almost half the states this year proposed cutting spending to balance state budgets, one of a variety of belt-tightening strategies pitched to lawmakers.

According to a 50-state survey conducted by the National Association of State Budget Officers, 22 governors proposed targeted spending cuts, 14 proposed raising taxes or fees, and 14 proposed eliminating vacant positions in their Fiscal Year 2027 budget plans.
