New governors smash veto records

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs (D) on Friday vetoed four bills aimed at limiting public funding for drag shows that she said would stigmatize and ostracize members of the LGBTQ community, bringing the total number of bills she has nixed this year to 119.

That is more than twice as many vetoes issued by any of Arizona’s 23 previous governors. In her first months in power that she shares with the Republican-controlled legislature, Hobbs has mercilessly wielded a red “veto” stamp gifted to her by former Gov. Janet Napolitano (D), who held the veto record that Hobbs shattered in just a few months.
