New laws curb AI use in health insurance denials

They come in response to physician and patient concerns about a reliance on automated decision-making tools.

Half a dozen states have passed legislation in recent months effectively limiting insurers’ use of artificial intelligence to deny coverage for medical care. 

Following a first-in-the nation law California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed in September, new laws in Arizona, Connecticut, Maryland, Nebraska and Texas address lawmakers’ concerns about the rise in automated insurance denials driven by AI-powered algorithms.
