New laws hold producers accountable for end-of-life product management

Laws were enacted this year in Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Nebraska, Rhode Island and Washington.

States are increasingly turning to producers of everything from paint to packaging to aid efforts to reduce waste and spur recycling.

At least 25 so-called extended producer responsibility measures were introduced in 13 states this year, with six so far becoming law. Laws were enacted in Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Nebraska, Rhode Island and Washington, while measures remain pending in Massachusetts and New Jersey.
