New privacy laws target data brokers as scrutiny of industry grows

Critics call it a largely unregulated industry that profits off people’s personal information.

Connecticut and New Jersey have joined a growing list of states that require data brokers to register and pay a fee before selling or licensing people’s personal data to third parties.

The 2026 laws come as privacy advocates cry foul over what they say is a largely unregulated industry that profits on the collection and dissemination of consumer data, with little public information on the companies doing it.
