Newsom signs California redistricting plan

The package targets five Republican-held seats.

California Democrats will ask voters to redraw congressional district boundaries in a manner that favors their party’s candidates in five districts currently held by Republicans after lawmakers approved a package of measures on Thursday.

The proposal, signed Thursday evening by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), comes in direct response to Texas Republican efforts to redraw U.S. House district lines to benefit the GOP. Newsom, long an antagonist of both President Trump and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R), has framed his plan as a way to save democracy.
