NFL’s Damar Hamlin sparks legislative push for lifesaving CPR, defibrillator laws

He joined the football league’s advocacy campaign to encourage lawmakers to address the dismal survival rate from cardiac arrest.

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin’s revival from sudden cardiac arrest on national television in January 2023 has jolted lawmakers in a growing number of states to ensure that more people will have access to lifesaving care.

Like thousands of young athletes every year, Hamlin’s heart stopped during a routine part of the game as he was hit in the chest during a play. But he received immediate emergency care that is still rare and was resuscitated on the field by medical personnel.
