Patchwork of consumer privacy laws enacted amid growing concern

Four more states passed new laws this year, and at least four more could follow.

The number of states with comprehensive data privacy laws could double this year amid growing consumer concern over how data is collected and as federal legislation continues to founder.

Five states previously enacted laws, and so far this year four more have passed new ones: Iowa, Indiana, Montana and Tennessee. Privacy watchers are next keeping a close eye on legislation being considered in New Hampshire, Oregon and Texas, while a pair of bills is also advancing in Florida.
