Plug-in solar bills sweep legislatures as residents seek relief from energy costs

Lawmakers are updating sometimes decades-old solar laws to allow for the technology’s implementation.

Lawmakers in more than half a dozen states passed bills this year to lower the barriers for using plug-in solar power systems, in an effort to blunt rising electricity costs and ramp up renewable energy use.

Colorado, Maine, Maryland and Virginia all enacted laws this year. Bills were given final approval but have not been signed yet in Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. And bills have made it through one chamber in California, Massachusetts and New Jersey.
