Population growth slows on immigration decline

All but two states registered slower growth rates or faster population losses.

America added only 1.8 million new residents over the past year, one of the slowest growth rates in the nation’s history, as net international migration dropped precipitously during President Donald Trump’s first year in office.

New figures from the U.S. Census Bureau, released Tuesday, show the American population grew by 0.5% between July 1, 2024 and July 1, 2025. That represented the slowest growth rate since the early period of the coronavirus pandemic, and a substantially lower growth rate than the previous year.
