Nearly half the U.S. population will be covered by comprehensive consumer data privacy protections after four states passed new laws this year, reigniting clashes between privacy advocates and business interests.
Alabama, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Vermont brought the total number of states with such laws to 23, according to tracking by the International Association of Privacy Professionals. Bills are also advancing in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, and one is still alive but hasn’t advanced in Michigan.
