Red states move to preserve coal power as Trump pushes industry revival

Most bills are framed as a way to bolster energy reliability, security and affordability.

As President Trump pushes to reinvigorate the coal industry, states are already exploring ways to keep coal plants online as they look to meet a surge in the projected power demand.

Indiana Gov. Mike Braun (R) has issued executive orders to extend the life of coal power plants and roll back climate initiatives, among other directives. Elsewhere, lawmakers considered, and in some cases enacted, legislation this year that could benefit coal.
