Red states seek to increase funding for private education subsidies

Proposals for increased spending are advancing despite opposition from Democrats and some Republicans.

Republican leaders in several red states want to increase funding for sweeping private education subsidies, even as budgets tighten and opponents say the programs — most of which serve all families, regardless of income — are a costly handout for the wealthy. 

Alabama and Tennessee lawmakers this session approved additional funding for education savings accounts that families can use to pay for private school tuition or other education-related expenses.
