S.C. considers near-total abortion ban

The Senate bill, set for its first hearing Wednesday, would prohibit the procedure as soon as a pregnancy can be detected.

South Carolina lawmakers will consider significantly escalating the state’s abortion restrictions during a hearing Wednesday, potentially further tightening what is already among the most stringent bans in the country. 

The bill, being considered in the Senate Medical Affairs Committee, would ban abortion from the moment a pregnancy can be detected, eliminating current exceptions for rape or incest, and classify abortion as a felony comparable to homicide.
