Spanberger vetoes legal pot market

Spanberger had sought widespread changes to the measure approved by the legislature.

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger, a Democrat, has vetoed legislation that would have created a legal and regulated market for recreational marijuana, five years after lawmakers first approved a legal marijuana system.

Spanberger has called for retail sales to begin in July 2027, but her veto comes after she asked for dozens of changes to the legislature’s plan. Lawmakers rejected many of those proposed changes.
