Speed limiter laws gain momentum in states

The legislation is modeled on laws requiring ignition interlock devices, which prevent someone who is intoxicated from starting a vehicle.

A grassroots push to require speed limiting devices in cars of habitual speeders is quickly gaining traction, as lawmakers seek to make the roads safer after a spike in traffic deaths over the past decade.

Virginia enacted a first-in-the-nation state law this month, after Washington, D.C., enacted a law last year. Legislation in Georgia is awaiting Gov. Brian Kemp’s (R) signature. And a bill in Washington State is one vote away from final passage.
