Spending growth returns to more normal levels

State governments spent more than $3 trillion on schools, health care and other public services last fiscal year, 6% more than the prior year, according to estimates released Tuesday by the National Association of State Budget Officers.

That increase marks a return to a more typical level of annual spending growth after a dramatic spike early in the Covid-19 pandemic.
