Sports betting taxes rise as states see revenue driver

At least four states hiked taxes on sports betting companies this year.

Major sportsbooks began charging Illinois bettors a 50 cent-per-wager fee this week, in response to a new state tax on sports betting companies. 

Illinois is one of several states where leaders turned to the industry for revenue to help close budget gaps and raise money for schools and other public services. Louisiana, Maryland and New Jersey also hiked taxes on sports betting companies this year.
