State lawmakers scramble to regulate deepfakes

Lawmakers in Illinois, Minnesota, Texas and Washington approved bills this year to crack down on synthetic videos known as deepfakes that are often pornographic in nature or used to try to influence elections.

It is an issue that is becoming more urgent for state legislators as rapid advancements in artificial intelligence software make deepfake technology more accessible and sophisticated.
