States crack down on AI therapy

Laws passed this year include regulations and outright bans.

State lawmakers are scrambling to corral the fast-emerging artificial intelligence therapy industry, with three laws passed so far this year and more legislation already set for 2026.

Mental health chatbot legislation was introduced in more than half a dozen states this year. The new laws include bans on AI mental health therapists in Illinois and Nevada. Bills are still under consideration in California and New Jersey.
