States expand efforts to limit student phone use in school

More than a dozen are considering new restrictions or tightening existing ones.

A national push to restrict students’ use of phones in schools is expanding this year, with bills to institute or broaden laws being considered in more than a dozen states.

New laws were already signed in Michigan and New Jersey, bringing to 30 the number of states that restrict or ban phones in classrooms, according to Ballotpedia tracking. Elsewhere, five states require districts to adopt phone restriction policies and four encourage districts to take action.
