States explore grid upgrades that could ease pressure on ratepayers

State lawmakers seeking ways to save consumers money on their electricity bills are exploring legislation that would require utility companies to consider grid-modernization solutions before building new infrastructure.

More than 20 bills introduced in at least a dozen states aim to ensure that utilities seek an array of hardware and software solutions known as advanced transmission technologies that could increase the capacity, efficiency and resilience of existing electrical grids.
