States step in with health insurance subsidies to help people stay covered

Congress failed to extend pandemic-era enhancements to premium tax credits beyond their Dec. 31 expiration.

The leaders of six states used state funds last year to partially — and in New Mexico’s case, fully — backfill expiring federal tax credits in an effort to protect families from skyrocketing health insurance premiums on the individual market.

State leaders stepped in after Congress failed to extend pandemic-era enhancements to premium tax credits past Dec 31.
