States target EV owners with new fees to offset gas tax losses

Lawmakers say the funds are critical to maintaining roads.

States seeking to bolster road maintenance funding are increasingly charging fees to electric-vehicle owners to make up for the decline in gas tax revenue.

Thirty-nine states currently charge electric vehicle owners a special registration fee, according to the Electrification Coalition, a nonprofit organization focused on accelerating electric vehicle adoption. This year, nearly a dozen states introduced legislation to impose new fees or increase existing ones.
