States tout hydrogen hubs for decarbonization push

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) Friday praised the Biden administration’s decision to award his state up to $1.2 billion in federal funds to build one of seven hydrogen hub projects, citing the potential for hydrogen to help reduce carbon emissions air travel, shipping and cement manufacturing. 

“Those are energy-intensive industries,” Newsom said on a call with reporters following the White House’s announcement, adding that these types of heavy industries need to be decarbonized to meet the state’s mandated goals.
