States want to clarify: AI is not human

A bill filed in Ohio last month was just the latest AI personhood measure this year.

An Ohio lawmaker wants to ensure artificial intelligence chatbots that may mimic human traits are never afforded human rights.

Rep. Thad Claggett (R), chair of the House Technology and Innovation Committee, introduced legislation last month declaring AI systems “nonsentient” and prohibiting them from achieving “legal personhood.”
