States want to let social media users take their data with them

The Digital Choice Act has been passed in two states and was considered this year in eight others.

Coordinated efforts to let social media users port their data to other platforms is showing fresh signs of momentum in state legislatures.

Since Utah enacted a first-in-the-nation law last year, South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden signed the nation’s second Digital Choice Act law last month. And bills were considered in at least eight states, with those in California, Minnesota and New York still in play.
