Tech groups back targeted AI chatbot regulation bill over broader approach

A California bill that would regulate artificial intelligence companions and allow citizens to sue for damages is garnering unexpected praise from two groups backed by the tech and venture capital industries. 

They prefer Sen. Steve Padilla’s (D) measure over a second, more sweeping chatbot bill authored by Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (D). Both are under consideration before the legislature’s Sept. 12 adjournment.
