Tech industry plays defense as states push new regulations

The tension between legislators and the industry reached new heights in 2023.

State lawmakers this year leaned aggressively into regulating the tech sector amid congressional inertia and with growing concern over data privacy and the impact of social media on teens.

The barrage of legislation that emanated from both red and blue states led to a spate of new comprehensive data privacy laws, fresh requirements for social media platforms, and even a TikTok ban in Montana.
